2008 Spring Wildflower Festival & Native Plant Sale
on
April 11, 12 & 13, 2008

Come choose from hundreds of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers – all for sale. Stay and make a day of it exploring our 300-acres of native woodland gardens and over twelve miles of hiking trails and paths.

The Spring Native Plant Sale features hearty native plants, guided wildflower walks, a variety of talks on gardening/wildlife/conservation topics and a few longer hikes exploring the Riding property

Please come and enjoy the beauty of the emerging spring!

Hours: Friday & Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and Sunday, 1 to 5pm. Free Admission.

2008 Events:


National Trails Day, Saturday, June 7, 2008

Celebrate National Trails Day at the Riding. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy a summer evening chasing fireflies and listening to the frogs. Featured this year will be a talk on falconry, an evening hike with JeffreyHunter, Riding caretaker and Bobby Thompson, our loyal night sky expert and finally two favorite summer pastimes – smores and stories by the campfire, featuring Jim Pfitzer, local Chattanooga storyteller. This evening is offered free of charge to the public through the generous support of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. Patrons will also receive a free pedometer from BCBST for participating in this evening’s event.

Schedule of Events
6:00pm to 7:00pm – Children’s Games and Family Picnicking
(Humphreys House Yard and Upper Pond). Bring a picnic dinner and find a nice spot around the pond to sit and relax. During this time, volunteers will lead a number of children’s activities, including a nature scavenger hunt and various games.
6:30pm to 7:00pm – Talk on Falconry – John Kern, apprentice Falconer will give a short talk on the art of hunting with a raptor, practiced for thousands of years by many cultures. John trains with Neo, a tiercel (male) red-tail hawk at the Riding during the appropriate raptor hunting season.
7:00pm to 8:30pm – Night Hike (begins at the Humphreys House) – Guided hike around the Riding under the light of the full moon. Jeffrey Hunter will point out the various creatures that come out during the evening hours, while Bobby Thompson will highlight the numerous star formations that appear through the brightness of this lunar bath.
8:30pm to 10:00pm – Stories by the Fire – Participants will gather around the fire for smores and storytelling by Jim Pfitzer.

Fall is the best time to plant, so be certain to come out and find something special for your garden from our hundreds of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers.

The Fall Native Plant Sale features hearty native plants, guided wildflower walks, a variety of talks on gardening/wildlife/conservation topics and a few longer hikes exploring the Riding property

Hours: Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and Sunday, 1 to 5pm. Free Admission.
