Spend the day in the forest and along the ponds and creeks of the Chattanooga Arboretum and Nature Center. With expert guidance from CA&NC naturalists, learn to make new connections with the natural world through simple nature journaling techniques. Nurture your creative spirit, while learning field identification on the trail. Lessons learned are transferable to the students in your classroom. A retreat can be scheduled for you and a group of friends, or for a school staff.
Using CA&NC as Your Outdoor Classroom
$350 per school (materials may cost extra), Maximum 30
Let our staff naturalists take your teachers through a fun one-day workshop at CA&NC! Through hands-on activities, teachers will learn how to use CA&NC as an extended “campus” with emphasis on (choose one): Endangered Species; Biodiversity; Using Nature for Interdisciplinary Learning; or Inquiry-based Education. Other topics may be covered upon request.
Creating and Using the Outdoor Classroom at Your School
$350 per school (materials may cost extra), Maximum 30
Let our staff naturalists come to your school and evaluate your outdoor spaces. First, we can provide advice on how to develop and/or enhance your outdoor classroom. Second, your staff will learn how to engage students in the outdoor classroom by participating in inquiry-based activities, outdoors, that incorporate multiple disciplines.
Teaching Language Arts in the Outdoors
Two-day Workshop $50 per person (call for special group rates), Maximum 30
This two-day workshop can be held on a weekend, or during the week, and will provide teachers with the materials and strategies they need to develop and implement high-interest, interdisciplinary outdoor teaching units based on a work of literature. Participants will leave with a language arts unit and a portfolio of teaching ideas. Workshop activities include hiking, nature journaling and discussion groups.
